The FoodSwitch® app makes shopping easier

If you’re wanting to make healthier food choices when grocery shopping check out the free FoodSwitch® app.

When opened on your mobile phone (Android/iOS) you can use this app to scan the bar code of commercial products in your country and access the key ingredients (i.e. energy, fat, saturated fat, sugar and sodium easily. The app will then offer up information on healthier alternative brands to ‘switch to’, compared to the version currently in your hand.

This app is now available in Australia, China, Fiji, Hong Kong, India, Kuwait, New Zealand, South Africa, UK and USA.

As the databases of foods vary in each country you will need to upload to the local app if you want to use it when travelling abroad. Currently the New Zealand version is undergoing some changes but stick with it, improvements are on the way.

For instance in some countries the app has the provision of filters that help you to narrow your search to match your dietary needs better e.g:

  • SaltSwitch offers lower salt alternative foods for people with high blood pressure or renal problems.
  • GlutenSwitch helps those on gluten free diets
  • FatSwitch focuses on helping you find lower fat foods if you have a high cholesterol; heart, liver or gall bladder issues.
  • EnergySwitch helps you find lower calorie items if you need to lose weight
  • SugarSwitch offers foods with less added sugar if you are at risk of Diabetes

NB: While this technology can only get better, remember it doesn’t matter how healthy a food may seem it is the amount that you eat which matters most so do contact me if you would like an assessment to find out how much food you should be eating to be the healthiest version of you.
