Celebrate with me 291 Newsletters over 28 years!

In 1996 I started writing newsletters to my patients and local GPs.

The idea came about because I was concerned that after visiting me, over time, nutrition science could change. I wanted people to keep up with the nutrition knowledge I was trying to impart.

Back in the day there was no internet, emails, social media, or nutrition noise it was a lot easier to get my healthy messages across, and I believed that education was more effective than advertising… still do. I also created a record of my own learning which helped me when I had to prove my work for yearly accreditation with the NZ Dietitians Board.

My husband Paul came up with the name Lea Az… a play on my name and the idea of liaison, to liaise or assist communication between people, or Lea A-Z i.e. me offering comment on lots of different topics.

Originally this quarterly bulletin was photocopied onto 2 sides of coloured A3 paper and then folded by me, my children or receptionist to A4, then ‘C’ folded and sealed and a sticky label with name and address plonked on top and posted.
(PS. Change did came around 2001 when machines took over the folding bit… phew!)

In the first edition in Summer 1996 there was a Christmas greeting and note about improved services. This was followed with short articles on Iron for teenagers; Vegetarian Diets, In Depth summer reading (I had just started a library service for clients) and I still love the book Learned Optimism that I reviewed back then. Also, there were notes on Essential oils, Pesto making; Ostrich meat; Piedmontese lean beef; a voucher for free coffee at Hays café; A Kids Korner with recipe by Kate- 8yrs old. Also… Summer tips to keep you healthy with info on Fluid tips for active people; Camping salads and Party nibbles… it was pretty good!

Lea Az carried on in this way for 48 editions by which stage we were mailing out 3,500 copies at great expense! My son Jonathan offered to build me a website bless him..and helped me to switch to Mailchimp newsletters in June 2011 which took the form of a lead article by me, a recipe and 3 Hot Links to topics of interest.

There’s been magazine articles, newspaper columns and three books along the way.
To this day I can’t thank Paul, Jonathan and Amelia enough for their support of my work.

So, this June is newsletter number 291… my last, which over 28 years of writing means I’ve clocked up just over 10 editions per year. Thank you for the many lovely comments and words of encouragement I’ve received from people along the way and I wish you all the very best of health always.

Love and Best wishes
