How to Grow an Athlete: From Playground to Podium

My latest book How to Grow an Athlete: From Playground to Podium is now in NZ bookshops

For a preliminary heads up as to what its all about listen to my interview with Susie Ferguson recorded on RNZ.

The book begins with the day to day needs of children aged 5-18 years. It sets out the quantities of key food groups and nutrients required for good health, growth and development along with practical tips to help children make changes to their eating habits if they are struggling.

Issues such as how to stabilize their energy levels, how to build strong muscles and bones, improve learning, memory and mood are covered. How does a child’s needs vary from an adults physiologically when they exercise and how should we manage issues such as specialization?

Then focusing more on sports nutrition the book shows how to modify childrens meals and snacks during times of greater need such as when they exercise, train and compete. Topics such as how to cope with eating before, during and after exercise for best recovery, hydration needs, touring, takeaways and much more…

The second half of the book seeks to raise awareness of some of the health issues that can get in the way of children’s enjoyment of sport, their growth and development. Such as making weight, diabetes, gut health, energy and iron deficiency, menstruation, vegetarian and vegan diets, mental health, cognition and wellness. For instance what are some of the things that stop children within a family or sports group from seeking help when they most need it?

In an effort to build a better culture within the community and sporting environment the book looks at what makes a good coach and provides team building exercises for coaches and sports dietitians. Activities such as a nutrition quiz to check nutrition knowledge, recipes for cooking meals and snacks, steps on how to run supermarket tours and to track hydration as well as sweat loss testing

If you are looking for a gift for a parent, caregiver, teacher infact any one working in the community with kids then this really is a must read.
