Pre-conceptual Nutrition

“As babies develop very rapidly in the first month of life it is important that a woman trying to conceive adopt a healthy diet and lifestyle first as it may be 4-6 weeks before her pregnancy is confirmed.” -Lea Stening

Most researchers agree that the healthier the mother at the time of conception the greater the likelihood that the baby will be born healthy, full term, of good body weight and that breast feeding will be more easily established.

If you are planning to conceive then you should consider the following:

  • Talk to your doctor about the need to check your medical history. This is important if you are taking any medication or have other health factors to consider such as diabetes, obesity, heart conditions, family health issues such as hypercholesterolemia etc.
  • Stop smoking.
  • Stop drinking alcohol.
  • Start taking folic acid tablets.
  • Have a nutritional assessment to ensure nutrient adequacy.
  • Aim to achieve a healthy body weight.
  • Re-evaluate your exercise programme.
  • Look at ways in which you could reduce stress.

Lea can help you to improve your diet and understanding of nutrition so that when you do start a family a healthier enviornment is created right from the start.
