Sports nutrition issues to consider for the Olympic games

If you are planning to take a team to an Olympic games or you plan to compete yourself then there are a number of issues you may like to consider in order to maximise performance and preserve good health.

Environmental Conditions

You will need to make nutritional provisions for the heat, climatic change, changes in altitude etc

Food Safety

Have you considered ways in which to prevent gastrointestinal illness?

Pre-Olympics Training Camps

What are you doing during your training camps to prepare yourself nutritionally for competition at the highest level?

Travel Itineraries

Have you considered the effects that stop over’s have on nutritional status en route to Athens?

Airline Meals

Are you aware of the extra in-flight meal services that are available for athletes and have you considered the sort of snack foods that you can take out of New Zealand?

Foods and Fluids to Take

Do you plan to take additional foods with you and have you considered how you will send these to the Olympic village?

Supermarket Access to Athletes Village

Do you know where the closest supermarkets are to the Athletes village?

Accreditation Procedures

Have you considered access to snacks and meals while waiting to clear customs and gain accreditation to the games?

Opening and Closing Ceremonies

What catering arrangements will you need to make if you plan to attend these functions?

Dining Hall Menus and Food Service

Have you considered a timetable for your meals and made provision for snacks and checked out suitable food choices?

Dining Hall Syndrome

Have your team members got their own nutritional plan to help food selection when faced with a dining hall full of foods from every nationality, available 24/7, and in any amount?

Food Services at Outlying Venues

What provision have you made for food services outside the Athletes village and at sporting venues?
